Belize - Guatemala Conflict

The dispute between Guatemala and Belize is simply due to the fact that it is one more case of territory stolen with impunity by England. As has happened in other territories around the world such as, for example, Falkland Islands in Argentina or Gibraltar in Spain; Belize was usurped from Guatemala by the English empire.

The Republic of Guatemala is territorially divided into departments and Belize was the 23rd department of the country until, using their pirates in the middle of the 19th century, and with the sole excuse of entering the territory to cut down wood in exchange for building a road, England invaded and appropriated the territory.

Over the years, the British Empire, aware of its strength and the approval of their American “decendants”, has ignored Guatemala's claims over the usurped territory, claiming that in colonial times they already confronted the Spanish empire for this territory known as British Honduras but ignoring, conveniently for them, that after independence the territory passed under Guatemalan jurisdiction.

Guatemala recognizes the right of Belizeans to have a country but continues to claim more than half of the territory as its own. Belizeans, after all this time, have obviously created their own identity and, logically, prefer to be a subject colony of a world power country like the United Kingdom rather than once again being part of a third world country like Guatemala.

Currently, Belize has chosen to play the victim card, stating that they are a poor defenseless people fighting for their freedom against a fascist Guatemalan state that wants to take over their lands, but what they hide is that Belize wants and demands more Guatemalan territory as theirs and, what is even worse, they hide provocations, aggressions and crimes committed by the Belizean army against Guatemalan peasants inside of Guatemalan territory.
